Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, within Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to pursue her artistic talents and be instilled by art. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for literature and theatre during the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to make use of the arts to find a way to express her feelings. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was still in university. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the jurors of the jury. She was also asked to look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right out of college as the junior publicist for one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
